Apple’s M1 Chip Vs Intel’s I7 Chip: Which One Will Win The Battle?
It is not the first time Apple has changed the fundamental technology their computers use. It happened when the company switched from Motorola CPUs to IBM PowerPCs in 1995. Then again, when they switched to Intel? We now have three new Macs that use Apple’s ARM-based M1 chip.

What is the Apple Silicon M1 Chip?
Apple’s M1 is a system-on-chip, which is a single chip that holds most of the main processing-related components in one place, including the processor, GPU, and memory. Built using a 5-nanometer production process and housing 16 billion transistors, the chip uses Apple’s chip design experience with the A-series line for iPhone and iPad to create a desktop-class SoC.
Eight cores are contained in the M1, with four high-performance cores connected by high-efficiency cores. While the former can be deployed for intensive workloads as quickly as possible, such as for demanding applications, the efficiency core is used for lower workload tasks, such as web browsing, while minimizing power usage.
Borrowing concepts from the mobile device line, the M1 also includes a 16-core Neural Engine, capable of up to 11 trillion operations per second. On top of that, it’s also said to have 15 times faster machine learning performance than the previous Mac.

This is where the good news gets a little less fun. The M1 is a more powerful, efficient, and fast chip. However, Apple had to run computer code designed for Intel chips through a complex translation system.
While this allows the M1 Mac to run any Intel Mac software, it does come with a performance penalty. For some programs, the drop in performance makes no difference in a practical sense. For others, this may be a problem. The problem is that there is no way of knowing how good or bad the x86 software will perform on an ARM Mac until someone tests it.

The full-spec MacBook Pro with Apple’s M1 chip is considerably cheaper than the 10th generation Intel Core i7 version. However, the Intel version allows for more memory, 32GB compared to a maximum of only 16GM in the M1 version. Appstudio states the Intel version allows 4TB of storage privileges, compared to the M1, which offers a maximum storage capacity of 2TB.
Why is that? We can assume that this distinction is due to a business decision that was taken by Apple to avoid product cannibalization from Intel-inside Mac. Otherwise, we can’t see any other logical explanation, as the M1 architecture should allow for more memory and storage.
The primary query is whether you should go in and order the Mac M1 to replace your current unit. In the case of the Mac Mini, we’d say the answer is generally “no” now. The M1 Mac Mini is non-upgradeable, has a slower network connection than the older model, and is less attractive as a whole.
With the Macbook M1, things just got more interesting. The M1 Macbook Air and M1 Macbook Pro 13 laptops are physically nearly identical to the Intel-based models. They will run all of the same software as Intel models and iOS apps, and M1 native apps. Their battery life has been massively increased, and their performance with native code is much higher than that of the same Intel version of the app running on the Intel Macbook model.
Some iOS App developers claim certain apps, and you need to run poorly through Rosetta. Other than that, it’s a pretty safe move as far as we can tell. Apple Silicon is the future of the Mac. The only other caveat is that this first-gen Mac M1 will likely be replaced soon with better technology implementation.
