The Outage That Shook the World — Facebook Apps Went Down for 6 Hours

Facebook and its family of apps — WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger — suffered a major outage around the world on Monday, October 4, for nearly 6 hours. The applications that have become vital communication platforms for billions worldwide began displaying error messages around 11:40 am EST, bringing their services to a halt, thus disrupting user feed and impacting the delivery of messages. Although technology outages are common, this was like no other. After all, Facebook is the world’s largest social media company that dominates the internet.

The American internet giant took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to respond to the user complaints and apologize for the inconvenience caused. The outage was due to changes to its underlying internet infrastructure responsible for coordinating traffic between its data centers. However, the damage had been done. Mark Zuckerberg lost $7 billion from his personal wealth in a few hours after the technical issue was reported. Also, the social media giant’s stock tumbled 4.9% to $326.50 on Monday. It is the largest daily percentage decrease since November 9, 2020.

This widespread downtime is considered to have a more significant impact on Facebook than the one in 2008 when a bug caused the social media platform to be offline for nearly a day.
